Newingtons Nature Adventure

Holiday adventures in the copse

Every Wednesday throughout August we opened The Copse to families offering them free afternoon activity sessions. Each week we offered a range of craft activities for families to enjoy and the chance to explore the woodland whilst doing a scavenger hunt.

For the scavenger hunt children were given magnifying glasses and a worksheet with various insects, leaves and habitats for the children to find. The children love to explore and be free to create their own little adventures.

With the help of resident artist Nova Marshall week one started with nature crown making. The children set out to gather their own natural materials such as leaves and sticks and created beautiful crowns.

We had den building with Keven where the children gathered large branches and sticks and created some lovely little dens. We also had a smaller table set up with Cara this was for those that wanted to do something a bit quieter like drawing or bark rubbing.

In week two we ran a double craft table where families could create leaf printing pictures and where they created little story books making people and creatures out of leaves. This was great to see the children using their imagination to see what they could create.

In week three the children gathered sticks to create beautiful dream catchers. Using wool, beads and various other materials the families could you use to get creative.

They also created stick characters where their imaginations brought their sticks to life One little girl named her stick ‘bobbob’ and created a whole little story for him.

We also had the presence of super friendly resident cat Maverick who frequently uses the copse to hang out. Some of the children created toys for him using sticks and feathers.

In our final week we created our very own rogues gallery. The families created self portraits using natural materials such as leaves, twigs and flowers. The children also decorated small cardboard pots and filled them with compost and grass seed to create mini grass heads.
